EV Charging Point Installation

As the UK moves away from fossil fuels towards a renewable energy economy there is an ever-increasing need for people to have access to an EV charging point. Installation of EV Charging Stations is a specialised task and you should always use a specialised installer to ensure that the unit is fitted correctly. We are Norfolk’s top-rated EV charging point stations installer, offering all types of electric car charger installation at the best prices throughout the UK.

Of course there are many companies which undertake Commercial EV Charging Station Installation but we like to think that we have something of an edge. We are fully certified EV charge point installers, and it is important to make sure that you only employ EV charging installation companies that use properly trained electricians – a general electrician, however experienced may not have the necessary expertise.

There are a number of different types of Commercial Electric Car Charging Points Installation which charge car batteries at different speeds. For commercial installation we would recommend the faster Level 3 and Level 4 charging units, although it is important to be sure that your electrical infrastructure is capable of carrying the higher loads these units involve.

Indeed it is important to recognise that fitting any Commercial Electric Car Charging Points Installations in your business will put additional pressure on your electrical system so it is important to use properly trained and experienced electricians. UK guidelines require that existing electric cabling, sockets and the main household supply fuse are able to carry the additional current drawn by the vehicle, and that there are adequate safety cut‐outs. A properly qualified electrician trained in installing EV supply equipment can assess whether your electricity supply is adequate to deal with charging an EV on top of your existing use.

There has never been a better time to Commercial EV Charging Station Installation but for all the reasons above we strongly advise that customers should research the credentials of companies that install electric car charging stations carefully. Whoever you select to take care of your Commercial Electric Car Charging Points Installation, safety regulations must be followed so it is important that they have well trained expert electricians who have the right experience.

Are there any government grants for EV charging points?

There are a number of National and Local Government schemes which you may be able to use to cover some of the costs of installing a car charging point at home. Our team would be happy to advise on this.

The UK is moving away from using fossil fuels towards a renewable energy economy, and electric car sales have soared in the last few years. This is hardly surprising as driving an electric vehicle is more sustainable, less polluting and can be cheaper to drive if done in the right way. It can also be more convenient than filling up with petrol or diesel, and whilst it does take a bit longer – there is no doubting that the easiest way to charge your car is when it is at home by installing EV charging points. We are your one-stop solution for EV charging station installation, whether you are looking for an office, multi-unit residence, or to grow your own business. As electric vehicles continue to become more common, we are here to answer all your questions about the installation of EV charging stations to help you get started.

What is an EV charger?

You can charge your electric vehicle in one of two different ways:

  1. By using the slow charger provided with your electric car. The slow charger uses a standard 3-pin plug to take power from your domestic supply and takes a minimum of 6 hours and up to 24 hours for a full charge
  2. By investing in electronic car charging points installation on the side of your house or garage. The EV charger is wired directly into your domestic electric supply and takes between 1 – 7 hours for a full charge

What are the different types of EV charging point installation?

There are 3 different levels of EV charging station installation that you can choose from – and the higher the charging level the faster it will charge your electric car.

  1. Level 1 – the level one charger is one that you plug into your wall at home. This will only draw a small amount of electricity from your domestic supply and is the slowest way to charge your electric vehicle. The maximum output of a level 1 charger is 2.3kw and will give approximately 5 miles for 1 hour of charge
  2. Level 2 – level two charging is the most popular option of EV charger installation in the UK and it is generally faster, safer and more cost efficient than level 1 charging. Level two requires a separate EV charging point installation cost and can offer output speeds between 3.7 kw and 22 kw. Generally speaking, level 2 is about 10-15 times faster at charging your vehicle than level one – but you will need professional EV charging installers in the UK to fit it to ensure that it is safe and meets all the regulations.
  3. Level 3 – level three charging (or DC charging) is the fastest way to charge an electric car, with the maximum output being between 50-250 kw. These are also known as rapid chargers, and due to the high power out put they require a lot of space and are one of the most expensive electric car charging station installation costs in the UK. Level 3 charging is normally seen in public and commercial settings to help you top up your car quickly and easily when you are out and about.

Electric car owners will tend to opt for a level 2 charging station after starting out on level 1 as it offers more convenience and speed. If you are looking for someone to install your electric car charging points in Norfolk, get in touch today for more information.

How to choose the location of my EV charger installation UK?

There are some important factors to consider when you are choosing the charge point:

  • Do you want the installation of your EV charging stations to be hidden or in view? If you want your charge point to be hidden then you need to choose an untethered charging point, otherwise you will have a coiled, tethered cable on show
  • The charging point on your vehicle will also determine the location when you are installing EV charging points. You need to make sure that you have it within easy reach otherwise you will struggle to charge your car!
  • How long is the charging cable? You need to make sure that you don’t leave a cable lying around as this could pose a serious trip hazard.
  • As one of the installers of electric car charging points in Norfolk, one of the biggest mistakes that people make is not having it close enough to the Wi-Fi router. Your charging point will require access to your internet, so make sure your charge point is not at the opposite side of the house.

What is the electric car charging station installation cost in the UK?

The typical electric car charging installation cost for a level 2 home charger ranges from £500 – £750 depending on the make and model of your charger. There are a lot of government schemes and grants to encourage motorists to move to electric vehicles, so it is important to do your research before committing to a flat rate EV charging point installation cost. Whilst it might seem like a short-term expense, once the installation is done you will benefit from the convenience of being able to charge your vehicle at home.

Once you have finished your electric car charging home installation in the UK, one of the benefits of an electric vehicle is that they are cheap to run! Electricity costs about 14p on average per KW, so a 40kWh car will cost about £6 to fully charge – which is certainly better than paying for a full tank of petrol!
